ICANN Open Forum
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is a global, not-for-profit organization that coordinates, at the overall level, the Internet’s systems of unique identifiers. In more technical terms, ICANN has responsibility for Internet Protocol (IP) address space allocation, protocol identifier assignment, generic (gTLD) and country code (ccTLD) Top-Level Domain name system management, and root server system management functions. In its stewardship of these global resources, ICANN’s mandate is to ensure the operational security and stability of the Internet; to promote competition in the registration of domain names; to develop policy appropriate to its mission through bottom-up, consensus-based processes; and to achieve broad representation of global Internet communities.
This open forum is an opportunity for ICANN to interact with IGF participants and exchange views with them in any areas pertaining to ICANN’s work. ICANN will use the opportunity this year to update and discuss with the IGF community on the internationalization of ICANN, and efforts underway pertaining to global and regional strategies. ICANN Executives and Board Directors will be happy to have an open dialogue with IGF participants on the ongoing developments in the various parts of the Internet governance landscape (such as WCIT), and on other matters that might interest the audience.
Representatives from a diverse range of stakeholder groups will participate in the open forum, including from governments, private sector, members of academic and technical community, and civil society.
