Corish - Ken
I am an education consultant with South West Grid for Learning, a not-for-profit trust based in the South West region of the UK, specialising in all aspects of online safety and digital literacy. This work includes not only the 2500 schools within our own region but many schools, partners and organisations nationally and internationally.
SWGfL is the lead partner in the UK Safer Internet Centre, the UK node of the European InSafe programme along with Childnet International and the Internet Watch Foundation. They are also a founding member of the UK Council for Child Internet Safety.
My work includes education programmes for students and staff that range from cyber bullying to protecting professional identity; creation of school improvement strategies and production of innovative E-Safety support materials. I am one of the development team that produced the multi award winning 360 Degree Safe and Online Compass self review tools. I have worked with a broad range of national and international organisations that include Childnet, CEOP, InSafe, NCMEC, FOSI and Internet Watch Foundation and have spoken at a broad range of key conferences in countries that include Egypt, Spain, South Korea, US and Azerbaijan.
In my past career I have been a primary school teacher (17 years); an Education Adviser for ICT with the City of Plymouth (10 years); an outdoor education instructor; industrial fastener salesman; diver; musician: author and free-fall parachutist, to name but a few.
By far and away the most influential was teaching; spending time with young people on the threshold of their lives is a great leveller and I found it a unique honour to be allowed to shape their futures. It is that legacy that drives my passion for education now; to be able to create strategies that impact on a broader playing field. That’s what my current role allows and that’s why I am in it.
To make a difference.
