Jayaram - Malavika
Malavika has over 15 years experience as a lawyer with a focus on technology. A dual qualified lawyer, she spent eight years in London. First, with global law firm Allen & Overy as an IP/IT lawyer in the Communications, Media and Technology Group, and then with Citigroup (as Vice President & Counsel in the Technology Legal Team, and later as Senior Business Analyst reporting to the CTO of Citigroup EMEA, on a large global outsourcing and data protection related project).
She is currently a partner at Jayaram & Jayaram, Bangalore, focusing on technology intensive transactions and contracts. She has a special interest in new media and cutting edge issues in the creative fields, and also works with NGOs and educational institutions on matters relating to copyright and fair use policies and IP audits. Malavika is a Fellow at the Centre for Internet and Society, Bangalore, assisting on projects and matters relating to IT law, data protection and privacy.
She has a keen interest in the legislative activity that is currently underway in India on the privacy front. She is also interested in developments that impact free speech and other civil liberties and create a chilling effect or a surveillance-friendly ecosystem.
She has a BA-LL.B (Hons.) from the National Law School of India and an LL.M. from Northwestern University in Chicago; she is currently working on a Ph.D. on data protection, identity and privacy in India, with a special focus on the new biometric identity project. She has been invited to be a visiting scholar at the Centre for Global Communication Studies at the Annenberg School, University of Pennsylvania for the Fall semester, 2012. She is on the advisory board of the Indian Journal of Law & Technology, and has been selected as one of the top 10 Indian lawyers to be featured in “The International Who's Who of Internet e-Commerce & Data Protection Lawyers 2012” directory.
